Driving Solutions Through Evidence-Based Research and Thought Leadership

At the Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations (CDN), informed policy decisions must be grounded in intense, relevant research. Our Policy and Action Research Program generates and disseminates high-quality, solution-oriented knowledge about neglected conflicts across Africa. Through focused studies, expert analysis, and public dialogue, we aim to deepen understanding of conflict dynamics and promote adequate responses that lead to long-term peace and development.

Our research explores the causes, impact, and evolution of armed conflicts and their effects on Africa’s political, economic, and cultural landscape. By drawing explicit links between data and policy, we provide practical recommendations to help guide national and international decision-makers, advocacy groups, and peace actors. We also create open discussion, debate, and learning spaces through publications and strategic outreach.

Our Policy Research Activities Include:

  • In-Depth Conflict Research
Conduct detailed and focused research on overlooked African conflicts to uncover their root causes, key actors, and broader regional implications.
  • Socio-Economic and Political Impact Analysis
Explore how these conflicts affect governance, economic development, cultural identity, and regional stability.
  • Policy Recommendations
Provide actionable insights and evidence-based recommendations aimed at resolving conflict through inclusive and peaceful means.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Public Debate
Share research findings, expert perspectives, and opinion pieces encouraging critical dialogue and inspiring informed action.

Our Publications Include:

  • Policy Briefs (CDN Conflict Policy Briefs)
  • Working/Discussion Papers (CDN Working/Discussion Paper Series
  • Perspective Papers (African Conflict Resolution Perspectives)

Through rigorous research and accessible publications, CDN ensures that knowledge becomes a tool for transformation, guiding policy, shaping dialogue, and empowering stakeholders committed to peace across Africa.

Partnership with Relevant Universities and Research Institutions

To support our mission, we are actively seeking partnerships with universities and research institutions across Africa and globally that specialize in conflict studies, peacebuilding, and international relations. These collaborations will enable us to share knowledge, strengthen research capacity, and co-develop evidence-based strategies for resolving conflicts, particularly those that are often neglected in international discourse.

Through these academic and research partnerships, CDN aims to:

  • Advance the quality and accessibility of conflict-related research.
  • Support joint publications, conferences, and training programs.
  • Bridge the gap between research and practical policy implementation.
  • Strengthen our advocacy through academically supported insights.
  • Build a global network of scholars and institutions dedicated to peace and justice.

We are currently exploring collaboration with the following institutions:

  • Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria (South Africa)
  • UN University for Peace (UPeace), San José (Costa Rica)
  • Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Pretoria (South Africa)
  • International Crisis Group
  • University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC)

In addition, CDN will pursue observer status at the African Union to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions and decision-making at the continental level. This engagement will support our broader goal of shaping responsive, inclusive, and informed strategies for addressing conflicts across Africa.
