Foster critical dialogue on Cameroon’s political future, examining democratic transition, autocratic resilience in Africa, and the role of civil society, youth, and intellectual leadership in conflict resolution and democratic transformation.
BackgroundCameroon approaches a pivotal moment ahead of its October 12, 2025 presidential elections. At age 92, President Paul Biya is once again a candidate—if reelected, his rule would extend beyond 50 years into his late nineties. Despite this, more than 30 challengers are in the race amidst a shrinking civic space and an electoral system widely seen as resisting reform.
These elections occur against multiple intersecting crises:
- Armed conflict in the Anglophone regions
- Boko Haram insurgency in the Far North
- Mounting tensions among Bamiléké, Bulu, Northern, and other ethnic communities
As debates intensify over succession, power dynamics, and citizen engagement, Cameroon represents a critical case study in Africa’s broader challenges, including democratic erosion, autocratic entrenchment, and grassroots resistance.
